Bridges Transitions

Dear Bridget

March 2009

  Dear Bridget:

I am a school counselor, not an accountant, but I need to monitor my budget a little more carefully these days.  I spend too much time looking at numbers!

Those numbers show that Choices Explorer's many features provide great value for my students' career exploration. But I was wondering if we could add to its value even further by using it in other classes.

Any ideas?

Sincerely,

Bud Gette

Dear Bud,

I am definitely not an accountant, but I appreciate the need to start budgeting. And thinking about your budget is the first clue to extending the reach of Choices Explorer.

What do accountants use all day? Their math skills. And where did they get those skills? That's right -- math class.

Did you know that every Choices Explorer career article features a real-life math activity? Students can see how math is used in every career, answering that age-old question, "Why do we have to learn this?" You can also find all of the activities in the Math in Real Life section, where they are organized by math concept.

It all adds up: Math teachers can direct their students to the activities to see some practical applications for the skills they teach.

Looking for more ways to multiply the value of Choices Explorer?

A great place to start is the School Subjects list in the Lesson Plans and Activities section. You'll find classroom-ready lesson plans for a wide range of subjects, even physical education. Not sure how career information can be applied in theater class? Check out some lesson plans to learn more.

What's the bottom line? You don't need creative accounting to increase the value of Choices Explorer, just some creative lesson plans! And that's a budgeting bonus.

Sincerely, Bridget

P.S. Speaking of money, there's still time for your students to enter our Are You Ready? video contest. Are they ready to work? This is their chance to prove it! They could win up to $2,500! For more details, visit us at www.bridges.com/video.
