Dear Ivana,
What a great question! It's also timely. To find your answer, take a look at the calendar. You'll notice a major holiday is approaching: Thanksgiving. What do we do on Thanksgiving? That's right -- we eat a lot of pie. But we also give thanks and think about how we can give back by improving the world around us.
What does this have to do with your students' resumes? Believe it or not, it's possible to gain valuable experience while helping others at the same time. Students without significant work experience can gain job skills while volunteering.
There are many options for volunteering. Our articles cover everything from accounting to zoo volunteers. We've even organized them into career clusters so students can find volunteer opportunities related to their favorite career cluster.
I find that some students are anxious to help others and start volunteering. In fact, a recent study found that more students do volunteer work than hold part-time jobs! But other students need to know how they can benefit. Pointing them to the resume-enhancing benefits of volunteering is a great way to get them started.
Until next time!
P.S. Don't forget -- there's still plenty of time for your students to enter our What Would You Do? video contest. We're wondering what they would do differently if life had a rewind button. They could win up to $2,500! For more details, visit us at www.bridges.com/video.
