Dear Bridget

December 2009

  Dear Bridget,

I can't believe 2009 is coming to a close! I want to start 2010 on the right note by getting my students fired up about setting some goals for the year.

Can Choices Explorer help them? The guideways have helped my students make comprehensive, realistic long-term plans, but I also want them to look at setting some goals that will help them succeed next year.

Any ideas? I want to get 2010 off to a good start!

Sincerely,

Earl Lee Riser

Dear Earl,

Ahh, the new's year resolution. I am familar with the urge to transform oneself on January 1. Just ask the personal chef I hired in 2008, or the personal trainer from 2007.

But at least I am not alone. Studies show that although about 50 percent of us make resolutions, only 12 percent actually succeed at reaching their goal. The funny thing is that 75 percent of resolution makers are going strong after the first week. Psychologists say that having specific plans will help us make it past that initial burst of enthusiasm. That's where Choices Explorer can help.

If your students want to make 2010 their best school year ever, direct them to our Succeeding in High School section. They'll find tips on studying and critical thinking, as well as articles on making a smooth transition from middle school to high school.

If you find that a lot of students are overwhelmed by their busy schedules (and who isn't these days?), point them to the articles on time management, information organization and balancing school with extra-curricular activities.

And let's not forget about you! Get the most out of Choices Explorer in 2010 -- read through the Professional Manual to discover all our great features and how you can use them to help students reach their goals next year and beyond.

On that note, I am off to research professional organizers in my area. See you next year!

--Bridget
