Dear Bridget

February 2010

  Dear Bridget,

Many parents are asking me how their students are using Choices Explorer. I would like to build on this interest and increase parental involvement in the career-planning process, but my students aren't always reliable when it comes to communicating with their parents.

What's the best way to take Choices Explorer from the classroom to the home?

Sincerely,

Miss Parente

Dear Miss Parente,

Expecting students to tell their parents about everything they learn at school can end in frustration. Ask any parent who was told about a science project the night before it was due or found an overdue library notice crumpled up beside a moldy sandwich.

Fortunately, students can access Choices Explorer's fabulous planning tools any time, anywhere, so it's easy for them to show parents what they're doing at home.  But we all know that just because students can do something doesn't necessarily mean they will do it. That's why increasing parental involvement is much easier when you have the right tools.

You can start by sending Choices Explorer's Quick Start Guide and an Access Reference Card home with every student to help them remember their access information when they're at home. These handy tools come from the Choices Explorer: Resource Materials page.

You should also download the parent letter from that same page. The parent letter can be easily customized, so you can point parents to some great tools to help them get the most out of using Choices Explorer with their children.

For example, the Parent Resources section of the Professional Tools is filled with great articles and worksheets designed to really engage parents in helping students plan their futures.

Studies show that parental involvement can increase students' odds of success. Use our tools to help parents get involved!

Until next time,

--Bridget
