Dear Bridget Product Usage Bulletin

March 2010

  Dear Bridget,

"What does this have to do with real life?" I hear that question all day!

I have some bright students who can't get motivated to pay attention in class -- any class. They don't see the point of the things they're learning.  As far as they're concerned, real life starts the minute they leave the classroom.

How can I use Choices Planner to help them see the relevance of what they're learning now?

Sincerely,

I.D. Clair

Dear I.D.,

Students never change! I remember sitting in class and wondering why I had to learn math. Then I did my taxes for the first time.

Choosing your career is just one part of your life equation. And, as many of us have discovered, it helps to have a career that fits into the rest of your life goals.

Our Career Plan Builder can help students take career planning out of the classroom. We'll guide them through the process of creating a work and learning plan that fits into their life. And to further emphasize the importance of what they're learning now, the Career Plan Builder factors in their high school courses to show how everything they learn adds up to a solid life plan.

You can also show your students how their career plans will impact the world around them. With this in mind, we're excited to introduce our IMPACT site. IMPACT links careers to current events to show how we can all make a difference in the world. It's a great equation: career planning plus real-life relevance.

We'll be changing the topics highlighted on IMPACT frequently. Our first edition looks at the recent earthquake in Haiti. Visit the site to discover how many careers and volunteer opportunities are involved in the process of rebuilding Haiti.

If IMPACT sparks an interest in a featured career, suggest using that career as a starting point in the Career Plan Builder. With the Career Plan Builder and IMPACT, students can discover how the things they learn now can add up to making a difference in the real world.

Until next time,

--Bridget
