Dear Bridget

March 2010

  Dear Bridget,

My students really enjoyed your recent Olympics coverage. It was fun to see them make the connection between what they were seeing on TV and the careers in Choices Explorer.

After the Olympics ended, I had a winning idea: I could continue to use current events to get them excited about careers.

How can Choices Explorer help me?

Sincerely,

Goldie Meadow

Dear Goldie,

That is a great idea! Students today have grown up in a constantly changing world -- just look at the new events in the Olympics for proof. When I was younger, ski cross was what happened to your skis before you wiped out. Now it's an Olympic event!  In a world moving faster than Linsey Vonn, students want the newest info possible (not to mention the newest clothes, music ... but I digress). Fortunately, Choices Explorer is updated regularly to reflect the changing job market.

The Buzz section is a great place to find out about current events in the labor market. You can learn about new developments in a particular career field and find out which career opportunities will be hot in the future. (Have you ever wondered why "hot" and "cool" mean practically the same thing in students' vocabularies? I have.)

We're always adding new careers to Choices Explorer to reflect current trends: your grandmother didn't have video game tester or genetic counselor as a career option, but your students do! We have to keep those options up to date, just like I try to keep my hairdo from looking as if it's frozen in time.

Speaking of current events, we're excited to introduce our IMPACT site. IMPACT links careers to current events to show how we can all make a difference in the world. IMPACT highlights careers connected to stories in the news. It's a great way to get students interested in the range of career possibilities in today's world.

We'll be changing the topics highlighted on IMPACT frequently. Our first edition looks at the recent earthquake in Haiti. Visit the site to discover how many careers and volunteer opportunities are involved in the process of rebuilding Haiti.

Until next time,

--Bridget
