Dear Bridget Product Usage Bulletin

April 2010

  Dear Bridget,

Just the other day, I was shoveling snow. But it won't be long before I am back to mowing my lawn. Summer is coming!

Many of my students are anxious to get into the workforce this summer, but we've heard the job market will be tight.  I would like to help, but I can't pay all of them to mow my lawn.

Can Choices Planner help?

Sincerely,

Ivana Help

Dear Ivana,

"A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing and the lawn mower is broken. "

James Dent said that first, but it summarizes my feelings about doing any kind of work in the summer. Why exert myself when I could be lying in the hammock?

As you've discovered, many students feel differently. They're anxious to break into the summer job market. Unfortunately, I have also heard that summer jobs will be scarce this year. The good news is that your students have many helpful job search tools in Choices Planner.

The Resume Builder is a good place to start. Students are guided through the process of creating a strong resume that outlines their qualifications and skills for the type of job they want.

Our Cover Letter Creator offers a few different templates to give them a solid starting point for creating a letter, whether they want to write a winning cover letter in response to an ad or to a cold contact.

If a student gets called for an interview, the Job Interview Practice tool offers tips on the best way to answer the questions that might be asked.

Finally, the Thank-You Letter Builder is an excellent resource to help students follow up after an interview and remind the interviewer about themselves and their qualifications.

Remember, it's the early bird that gets the worm ... and the prepared student who gets the job. And speaking of birds, worms and lawns, I am off to plant some flowers for spring!

Sincerely,

--Bridget
