Dear Bridget, My students are always asking me what high school and college are really like. Between you and me, I think they're nervous. I can tell them about my own glory days for reassurance, but as far as my students are concerned, those were the Dark Ages. Can Choices Explorer help them feel more prepared for high school and college? Thanks in advance, Anne Teak |

Dear Anne, I have also noticed students' eyes glazing over when I talk about my college days -- usually when I start describing my daily five-mile hike through a blizzard, uphill both ways, to get to campus. But seriously, today's students face some unique challenges in adjusting to both high school and university. That's one reason why Choices Explorer features blogs written by real students to show our readers how real people cope. Jessica is a high school student with a busy schedule and big dreams for her future. Students can follow her adventures as she juggles her activities and makes some important decisions. Michelle is a college student specializing in wind energy. She has a lot of advice on navigating the college world. And if students want to read about the working world, they can follow Jon's adjustment to a new job as an associate producer for a sports show. I think your students will enjoy these blogs. (Actually, I think you might enjoy giving them a read too.) And who knows? Perhaps they'll even inspire your students to start recording their own career planning thoughts, reflections and goals in the journal component of their portfolio. Middle school students who feel nervous about high school (and who doesn't?) will also want to check out the Succeeding in High School section, where they'll find tips on everything from balancing school with the rest of their life to achieving academic successand managing their time. If they're getting ready for college, our Preparing for College section can answer some questions and get them started in the right direction. We hope these features will help your students feel more confident about the next step in their education. And I also hope you have a safe and happy holiday! See you next year! |
