The Stafford/Direct Loan
that you are seeking to have deferred must have been disbursed prior to July 1,
1993; PLUS Loan borrowers must have been disbursed before August 15, 1983.
A military deferment is
intended to cover active duty status in the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air
Force, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard). Members of the National Guard or the
Reserves who are serving in a full-time active duty status for a minimum of one
(1) year or in cases of a national emergency (not a two week active duty
assignment for training status) may qualify for the military deferment.
Additional benefits are
available to borrowers who served on active duty in connection with Operations
Desert Shield/Desert Storm and military personnel that were mobilized in
response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Please contact your lender
regarding these benefits.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps deferment is intended to cover active duty service in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps (NOAA).
A Public Health Service
deferment is intended to cover service as a full-time officer in the
Commissioned Corps of Public Health of the United States Public Health Service
(USPHS).
If you meet these
requirements, you may be eligible for a Public Service deferment. Complete the
deferment request form and send completed forms to the lender or servicer of
your loan(s).
