Military, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps, or Commissioned Corps of Public Health of the United States

The Stafford/Direct Loan that you are seeking to have deferred must have been disbursed prior to July 1, 1993; PLUS Loan borrowers must have been disbursed before August 15, 1983.

A military deferment is intended to cover active duty status in the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard). Members of the National Guard or the Reserves who are serving in a full-time active duty status for a minimum of one (1) year or in cases of a national emergency (not a two week active duty assignment for training status) may qualify for the military deferment.

Additional benefits are available to borrowers who served on active duty in connection with Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm and military personnel that were mobilized in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Please contact your lender regarding these benefits.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps deferment is intended to cover active duty service in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps (NOAA).

A Public Health Service deferment is intended to cover service as a full-time officer in the Commissioned Corps of Public Health of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS).

If you meet these requirements, you may be eligible for a Public Service deferment. Complete the deferment request form and send completed forms to the lender or servicer of your loan(s).

If you do not meet these requirements, seek information on forbearances.
