Volunteer in the Peace Corps, ACTION Program, or Tax-Exempt Organization

The Stafford/Direct Loan that you are seeking to have deferred must have been disbursed prior to July 1, 1993; PLUS Loan borrowers must have been disbursed before August 15, 1983. 

Additional eligibility requirements are that you must have agreed to serve as a volunteer on a full-time basis for at least one year. For the Tax-Exempt Organization deferment, the organization must be exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3)of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and provide service to low-income persons and their communities to assist them in eliminating poverty and poverty-related human, social, and environmental conditions. 

If you meet these requirements, you may be eligible for a Public Service deferment. You will need to complete a deferment form and send completed forms to the lender or servicer of your loan(s).
