Choices CD Edition Technical FAQ
Get quick answers to some of the most commonly asked technical questions.

When we try to open Choices, we get a message that it's "trying to open or unlock the OnTrack database."
Have your technician assign full control to the OnTrack and Sessions folder for the user group.

When trying to open or create a Choices session file, we get a message that "the file is not a valid sessions file."
Verify there is sufficient hard drive space for saving session files. Each file takes 20k of space. Verify the folder is not limited to the amount of files that can be saved to it or that the folder is not restricted to less than 20 kb of space. Ensure that user group has full control to the session and OnTrack folders.

When we try to open Choices, the screen turns black and it's very slow/freezing.
Go into the System Manager/Change Setup Options, and turn off the Time Service Server.

When trying to launch Choices, we get a message indicating that "this version of Choices has expired."
Contact Bridges Customer Support at 1-800-468-6927, or
Support Form to see if your Choices license was renewed. If it's the current version of Choices that's running, then check the date on the workstation. An incorrect date on a workstation or network can trigger the expiry message. Contact Bridges Customer Support to run an expiry fix.

Workstation install vs. network server install?
First determine who will be using Choices, and if they need to save their information to a Choices session file. If it's only (for example) the counselors who need to access Choices, and who are using Choices to get occupation and post-secondary school information for individual students, then most likely a workstation install will suffice. However, if multiple classes need to access Choices from multiple labs, then a network server install would work better, as the files that are needed for reporting purposes will be in one location (on the server).

Does our site license limit the number of computers at our site that can access Choices?
There is no limit. Choices can be installed on the network server (accessed by multiple computers on campus), or can be installed to individual workstations (but as many as you like). However, we do not recommend doing both types of installs. Choices cannot be installed on computers that are not on site.

I'm trying to install this year's Choices, and I get a "move data process" error.
This can occur when installing Choices over top of an existing install that is currently being used. Ensure all connections to the Choices shared folder on the server are terminated prior to installing. This can also occur on Windows XP workstations, which is caused by having limited rights to the folder it's being installed to.

When trying to download Choices CD Download, we get a security warning message, "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"
This is a standard browser message when downloading exe files. Click Run and the InstallShield Wizard will guide you through the program setup process.
