Bridges Initiates Pilot Project With American School Counselor Association To Create Professional Training Network
Bridges and ASCA to support an expanded role for school counseling professionals. 400 - 500 counselors targeted for spring 2004 pilot. February 23, 2004 Kelowna, B.C - Bridges.com, Inc. (TSE: BIT), North America's leading provider of career and educational planning solutions is pleased to announce a pilot project with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), a worldwide non-profit organization based in Alexandria, Virginia. This project sets the stage for the introduction of an expanded ASCA Training Network, a co-developed professional development resource targeted at making training services available to over 100,000 school counseling professionals. One of ASCA's key goals is to support professional school counselors in the continuous development of their professional expertise. The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs (http://www.schoolcounselor.org) has defined an expanded role for school counselors, calling for comprehensive, data-driven school counselor programs providing services to all students. Quality training will enable counselors to be successful in this dual role. "The ASCA National Model defines the 21st century school counseling program. It provides a framework for counselors to shift their emphasis from being service-centered for some students to becoming program-centered for every student," says Richard Wong, executive director of ASCA. "The ASCA Training Network will provide counselors with the training they need to lead comprehensive school counseling programs that ensure all students achieve success. This pilot project lets us develop the foundational expertise to co-develop an expanded training network." "The role of the counseling professional in schools is expanding," explains Doug Manning, president of Bridges. "To facilitate this changing role, these professionals need easy access to a variety of types of face-to-face and online training opportunities. By combining Bridges' business and marketing expertise with ASCA's content expertise and network of counseling professionals, we can generate new revenue opportunities while enabling improved professional development services for school counselors." A pilot version of the ASCA Training Network will be introduced in the spring of 2004, with training sessions being offered to counselors in 14 different states. A successful pilot will enable both ASCA and Bridges to expand the future reach and influence of the ASCA Training Network. Manning is excited about the possibilities presented by this opportunity. "ASCA is an ambitious association, dedicated to the professional development of all counselors, not just their members. We believe that the ASCA Training Network will enable many thousands of counselors to more effectively prepare young people for success in the 21st century. During the initial pilot phase of this project, we expect to develop efficient procedures that make this training network very scalable." Wong added, "Counselors have to answer the question, ‘How are students different as a result of what we do?' ASCA has developed a comprehensive framework that enables counselors to answer that question in a way that reaches every student. The ASCA Training Network will enable us to effectively train counselors for excellence in their expanded role." The first training sessions begin in April, with subsequent sessions provided across the U.S. in May and June. Initial training will focus on providing counseling professionals with lessons and student resources for a comprehensive school guidance curriculum and individual student planning. These are both key components of the delivery system in the ASCA National Model. About American School Counselor'S Association About Bridges Contact:
