1. riteprofstring error, typically at Web browser section of install.
Always ensure that
the administrator account has logged on, then proceed with reinstall
of Choices 2003/Career Futures 2003. If this is a server-based install,
initially install onto local workstation. Once installed and run successfully
as administrator then copy the Choices folder and its subfolders to
the server.
Note: To retain historic data and student session files please
refer to Files to be backed up.
Why?
Main reason is a permission issue. Certain registry flags fail to get
set and the install fails.
2. Unable to open/create RootStorage error.
Always ensure that
the administrator account has logged on, then ensure there are
no connections to the shared Choices folders .
Why?
Occurs when installing
new version of software over last year's install and is unable
to overwrite a file that is already in use.
3. Running software screen freezes/takes 5 mins to load/Netapi.dll errors
Within the Choices/Career Futures
main folder is a folder named Common. Within the Common
folder is a file named Config.ini. Double-click this and
it should open in Notepad. Within the Config.ini file, scroll down to the line "NWDATE=1" and change this to "NWDATE=0" then save the file and close Notepad.
Now Choices should run.
Why?
Only affects certain
hardware builds of machines running mainly Windows 98 Second Edition operating
system.
4. Interest Profiler fails to launch -- Choices Macintosh Only.
Ensure third-party security
software allows applications to launch other applications. If using Macintosh
Manager, (Mac OS9 or greater), ensure within the Security Tab that
Applications can: "Open other applications, such as helper applications"
has been enabled.
Why?
The Choices program
consists of multiple applications all launched from the one Choices interface.
5. Novell
based server install -- Ontrack Database errors.
Caused by a bug in
the Novell Client. Must ensure that the Novell Client is running at minimum:
- Windows 95, 98,
ME -- Novell Client 3.32 Service Pack 1 -- Download
Here
- Windows NT 4, 2000,
XP -- Novell Client 4.83 Service Pack 1 -- Download
Here
Why?
A known connectivity
bug when connecting to Borland Databases. Our student Ontrack database
is Borland-based. Note: All users must have Full access to the Common
and Sessions folders. Can remove Erase rights on Common folder only.
6. Windows-based server install -- Ontrack Database errors.
Typically it is a user's
permission issue to the Choices/Career Futures Common folder. To test this,
log on as the administrator account and the issue will be removed. Note:
All users must have Full Control on the Common and Sessions folders. Can
remove the Delete permission on Common folder only.
Why?
Without full access
to the Common and Sessions folders the product will not function correctly.
7. Universal Naming Convention (UNC) not supported.
Ensure that the server based install of Choices/Career Futures main folder is
mapped to each workstation. Then launch the Choices program from the mapped
drive not from Network Neighborhood.
Why?
At present the Choices/Career
Futures programs are 16-bit. Only 32-bit programs support UNC.
8. Files to be backed up.
Ensure the Choices/Career Futures Sessions folder and the Ontrack.bin
within the Common folder are backed up.
9. Career Aptitude Survey passwords.
The Career Aptitude
Survey (CAS) is an additional purchase and can be activated with a password
during/after the install of the main Choices or Career Futures software.
If during the install, CAS was selected to be also installed then you
will be prompted for a CAS Install password. Once installed a different
password is required to run the assessment. These passwords are contained
within the Career Aptitude Survey Technical Manual or please contact
us for these passwords. (Must have a separate license to use CAS)
10. State data information available on floppy?
For 2003, the state
data floppy disks were not created due to lack of demand.
Most of the states' data are already included on the Choices and Career
Futures 2003 CDs. The few states that did not submit their data in time
will be posted on the Software Updates area of our site -- Check
Here.
11. Disabling new Session password feature.
Open System manager Then Select Change Setup Options then
Setup options. Under Choose directory for Choices files. Uncheck
Files require password.
Why?
As requested this
feature has been added to stop students opening and changing other students
session files.
If a student has already opened their 2002 session file in 2003 software
before disabling the password feature then that session file will always
require a password as the conversion to the new format is only one way.
12. Memory/NTVDM.exe errors.
Ensure that the Windows 2000 or Windows XP machines are running the latest
service packs. Also try creating a new account and then log on with the
newly created account to run the program.
Why?
At present the Choices
and Career Futures programs are 16-bit and they run within the NT Virtual
DOS Machine (NTVDM). Some machines have been found to have corrupt versions
of these system files. Also have found that, due to corrupt user profiles, the
NTVDM does not function correctly.
